What are the alternatives to divorce?
There are two other ways of ending the obligations which come with marriage: Annulment - An annulment is a determination that there never was a valid marriage. This is more difficult and more complicated to prove and is possible in only a few circumstances. Some of the possible reasons are if one of the parties was too young at the time of marriage, was mentally incompetent, was already married to someone else, or if the parties are too closely related by blood. If you are trying to get an annulment, you should consult an attorney. Legal separation - In this process, the property is divided, and alimony, child custody and support are decided upon. The couple no longer live together, but remain married. This process can be used in cases where religion does not permit divorce, or in preparation for an eventual divorce. Legal separation is not available in all states.
